I was never the first to raise my hand in class, afraid of asking something “obvious.” I never told boys I liked them, terrified of rejection. And even though I loved to sing, I was too scared of performing in front of people, and would have an internal break-down whenever it was my time to sing a choir solo (this played out in an epic fashion when I was 17 and had a panic attack on American Idol.) This pattern continued to play out in adulthood, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, from trying too hard to prove I deserved a seat at the table, to not even throwing my hat in the ring for a chance. It wasn’t until my 30’s (YES, 30’s!!) that I realized just how extensive my own negative self-talk was, and how this repeated pattern of shrinking - and over-compensating - was creating a certifiable glass ceiling for me, both personally and professionally. I’ve spent much of the past few years working to re-wire these patterns. There are specific ways you can do this, but in my case, it was a mix of Neural Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, meditation, psychedelic medicine, and sheer will. The old me would have tried to ignore anxiety. Now I use breath exercises and NLP to reframe negative physiological states. For example, if I’m performing at an event, I now label my sensations as excitement, not anxiety. Excitement I can work WITH. Naming my cancer Bob last year would also be considered an NLP trick (Bob sounds a whole lot less scary than Cancer.) While many of you know me as a techno-enthusiast, I’m equally enthusiastic about the ancient technologies we have inside ourselves, readily at our disposal. There are so many incredible ways to approach our internal re-wiring, and the best part - so many of them are free. You can learn more about these methods online or in a number of behavioral psychology books (ie Mindsight). I’m also launching a podcast...in just a few weeks!...that explores these topics.
