Today we're reflecting on the life and musical legacy of Edward “Eddie” Van Halen. He was a self-taught performer whose colorful, virtuosic style made him one of the premier guitarists of his generation, as well as one of the most emulated musicians in rock history.

The Dutch American artist performed on this guitar, while on tour in the 2000s, before donating it to our museum. The instrument is a replica of his famous "Frankenstein"—a hand-assembled guitar that combined a Fender Stratocaster-shaped body with parts from various other instruments that he picked up and tried out while constantly tinkering with it during the mid-1970s and early 1980s.

During a visit to the museum in 2015, Eddie Van Halen gave us new insights into how experimentation and innovation shaped every aspect of his musical career, from his favorite instrument to how he held a guitar. Follow the link in our bio to read the story: s.si.edu/3d3jSxv
