Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax usually made news wearing his baseball glove. However, in the 1965 World Series, he made headlines by choosing not to put his glove on.
Game 1 of the World Series fell on Yom Kippur. Koufax choose to honor the holy day and not pitch. Some criticized him for missing such an important game, but Koufax came back to play in three of the remaining six games, pitching a shut-out victory for the Dodgers in the seventh and deciding game to win the Series. He was later named “Sportsman of the Year.”
For those observing Yom Kippur, we wish you a meaningful fast.
