For generations, Americans cast their ballots using gear-and-lever voting machines like this one. Patented by inventor Alfred J. Gillespie, this machine's curtain served a dual purpose. By pulling the curtain, voters both ensured their privacy and "unlocked" the device's levers, priming the machine to accept their ballot. 🗳
Did you cast your first vote behind a curtain? Did you pull a lever or fill in a bubble? Did you go to a polling location or drop a letter in a mailbox? How did you feel when you voted the first time?
For #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, we'd like to hear your stories about the first time you voted. What do you remember about the first time you cast a ballot?
Still need to register to vote? Follow the link in our bio to visit https://vote.gov/ and learn how you can vote in your home state or territory.
