Over four decades of self-imposed isolation at his home in Medellin, Colombian artist José Antonio Suárez Londoño has turned drawing into a meditative act of self-invention.

He considers social isolation integral to the fruition of his best work, and for the last two decades, has filled sketchbooks with daily drawings.

Scattered throughout the pages of the 2008 edition of this series, known as “The Yearbooks,” are landscapes, anatomical studies, records of his mundane activities, and depictions relating to readings of writers like Orhan Pamuk, Winfried Georg Sebald, and Jorge Luis Borges.

“This recording of reality turns everyday life into an aesthetic experiment,” curatorial assistant Karen Grimson writes for #MoMAMagazine.

“Merging irony with poetry, the world’s wonders with its absurdities, Londoño’s ‘Yearbooks’ are not just a visual autobiography, but an atlas of days experienced through drawing.
