Not many birds are brave enough to nest on the ground, let alone on cultivated land, but the northern lapwing is as fierce as it is beautiful. Nests, and the young that inhabit them, are protected by adults to ensure that intruders, which often include horses and cattle, do not harass or injure lapwing chicks, giving them their best chance at survival.
