Originally found only on the island of San Esteban, the San Esteban spiny-tailed iguana was introduced to the island of Cholludo by the Comcáac Indians. Thanks to the mostly undisturbed tropical dry shrubland on both islands, this species has been able to thrive, seeking refuge in ground holes and hollow cardon cacti. While primarily herbivorous, adults have been known to eat tiger whiptail lizards, chuckwalla, and bats.
