Happy birthday to #SheelaGowda, who was born #onthisday in 1957 in Bhadravati, India. Three of her early sculptures from 1996 to 2004 are featured in the exhibition "Fault Lines: Contemporary Abstraction by Artists from South Asia." The works in "Fault Lines" are created from materials including discarded tar barrels, cow dung, a material harvested ritualistically from sacred cows, and kumkuma, a red powder that holds both social and religious associations. Although she was trained as a painter, the sculptures and installations for which Gowda is best known are characterized by her use of locally sourced materials that speak to the disparities between urban and rural life in India and address experiences of trauma and loss.
