We are proud of the important role Philadelphia architect #JulianAbele played in the museum’s early history. The first African American to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Architecture, Abele was part of a team of local architects who collaborated on the original design of the building. By 1917, when the plans were officially adopted, he had risen to the level of chief designer for Horace Trumbauer’s firm, the company selected to oversee the building’s construction. As one of the first Black architects to achieve such prominence, Abele was almost certainly subject to the pervasive atmosphere of racism during this time period. This is likely why we don’t have archival documentation to highlight his specific contributions to our building’s design. Nevertheless, we celebrate this talented designer and pioneer in his field for his contributions to our history.
