Painter #BeaufordDelaney made a name for himself in the 1930s and 1940s with brightly-colored street scenes, interiors, and portraits of prominent Harlem Renaissance figures rendered in his thick, impasto technique.

But during the early 1950s, Delaney’s paintings became progressively abstract. In 1953, at the age of 52, Delaney left New York for Paris, where he would live for the rest of his life. He began this painting the following year, the “16” of its title probably meaning that this was his 16th painting in Paris.

Using densely applied oils to paint ribbonlike swirls in greens, reds, and yellows—colors that would dominate his palette in both abstract and figurative works over the next two decades—Delaney realized his goal to “remember the sculpture and structure of color.”
