Martine Syms’s video opus, “Lessons I-CLXXX,” gathers 180 30-second clips from her own personal video diaries, as well assources like YouTube, talk shows, and Vine. The clips are woven together to form a visual poem inspired by and participating in the Black radical tradition. Syms’s early lessons draw on poet Kevin Young’s The Grey Album: On the Blackness of Blackness (2012), in which the traditions, or “lessons,” of Black life are understood as the center of American culture.
