“When I first moved to New York years ago, I knew I wanted to make a film about dispossession, about the power of coming together in a moment of immense pain and freedom dreaming.” Artist, writer, and activist @tourmaliiine introduces “Salacia,” premiering tonight at 8:00 p.m. EDT on our website.

In the style of Black fantasy and folktales, #Tourmaline’s film, a new addition to our collection, offers a speculative vision of Mary Jones, a Black trans woman and sex worker who lived in SoHo in the 1830s and was imprisoned for stealing a man’s wallet.

Jones (played by @RowinAmone) is transported from SoHo to Seneca Village, a community of free Black and Irish immigrant landowners once located between what we now call Central Park. When the City destroyed the village through eminent domain, all traces of the settlement were lost to history.

Join us for the online premiere, and read curator @thomaslax’s introduction to “Salacia,” at the link in our bio.
