My mother is white, she grew up Mormon, on a farm, in a small town called Ooltewah, Tennessee. My brothers and I grew up there and it’s a rather small and white town. A place where I never felt like I belonged.   My family looked and acted differently than most of the people in my neighborhood, church, school, so I tried hard to act as “normal” and white as I could in order not to stand out. To top it off, I grew up going to the Mormon church. That’s where the outdoors and nature comes in. It was the only place where I didn’t feel “othered.” I could be 100% of my goofy-ass self and not have a care in the world.   The outdoors provided me with a safe space and brought me that sense of belonging I yearned for. After years of spending time escaping to the outdoors, I realized I wanted to introduce its wonders to others. I always felt like it was a place that belonged to everyone.   So in August 2017, after a whirlwind trip to Arizona and Utah with a group of my friends, I joined forces with Luz Lituma on a project that allowed us to inspire others through our experiences of being WOC in the outdoors. That is when @latinxhikers was created.
