Fruit and vegetables are a recurring motif in Urs Fischer’s visual vocabulary, whether in the form of actual produce, left to decay in the gallery; perfectly lit photographic images; or uncannily realistic wax or painted bronze reproductions. This universal imagery introduces the dimension of time into Fischer’s investigation of materials, while elaborating on the art historical tradition of the “vanitas.” In this video, curator Francesco Bonami traces this thread through Fischer’s sculptures and paintings of the past two decades, including the artist’s candle portrait of Bonami himself, which gradually melts away over time.
