Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Names matter. That’s as true for a Shakespearean rose as it is for one of the most endangered carnivores in Africa. An appealing common name has the power to keep a species in the (often fickle) public consciousness–and to rally support and funding for its conservation. On the flip side, a moniker with negative connotations can leave its owner out in the cold. That’s why many conservationists prefer to use the alluring "painted wolf" over the stereotype-saddled "wild dog." And let’s be frank–this is no exercise in false advertising. What could be more fitting than a name which evokes the painterly, brushed-on beauty of those unmistakable coat markings? And although Lycaon pictus is today the sole ruler of its taxonomic territory (as the only surviving member of its genus), somewhere in the murky evolutionary past, these canids do share a common ancestor with wolves. Like their carnivore cousins, painted wolves are accomplished pack hunters, known to scavenge only rarely.
