Photo by @stevewinterphoto | This image will stay with me forever. It's of a lioness called Naturinda that got caught in a poacher's snare in January 2018. I was on assignment for @natgeowild, shooting a story on tree-climbing lions with scientist and cameraman Alex Braczkowski when we found her in a weakened state. The biggest threats to African lions are snaring and conflict with cattle farmers. When a lioness like Naturinda gets caught in a snare, she loses condition, struggles to keep up with the pride, and often dies. But it’s not just the loss of her that’s a shock to the system; it’s also the lost opportunity of having eight to 15 cubs in her lifetime. See more about this lioness on @disneyplus where you can catch our show on tree-climbing lions. The world needs to see the real threats facing Africa’s big cats. Follow me @stevewinterphoto for more shots and stories of the world’s big cats. #lioness #lionking #snares #snaring #snare
