Video by @lucalocatelliphoto | Airplane debris is crushed for recycling in Roswell, New Mexico. A bulldozer tears apart the fuselage and the interior trim of an MD-80 airliner with brute force. This shredding is the last phase of recycling when a plane is decommissioned. About 20 percent of an airliner can be reconditioned to be put back into the market; after the most valuable parts are extracted, the dismantled planes become recycled aluminum, ending up in everyday objects like soda cans.

As the population booms, we are draining the Earth’s resources in a linear "take, make, waste" economy. We are in a transitional time, when the world is awakening to the urgency of needing solutions for living sustainably on our planet—and realizing that this linear model is unsustainable. The concept of the circular economy, in which we are frugal with resources and recycle endlessly, is emerging as a way to a better future. It requires changing our mindset—to see waste as a resource and avoid creating trash in the first place. These were taken on assignment for "The End of Trash," a forthcoming cover story for the magazine. Follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to see the most promising examples of confronting the climate crisis.
