Three years ago, I traveled to Curaçao for a family visit. My father was born there, and while he moved to the Netherlands, where I was born and raised, his brother and two of my cousins still live on this Caribbean island. Never could I have imagined that during this visit I would be swimming with a rescued flamingo—or that these images would result in a story for @natgeo magazine. Due to his injuries, the flamingo couldn't be released, and he is cared for by my cousin Odette, a veterinarian in Curaçao. She named the bird Bob and made him the ambassador for her conservation education charity. Through @fdoccuracao Odette educates children about the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife.
