Video by @lucalocatelliphoto | Clouds are generated by steam rising from one of the largest geothermal power plants in the world, which draws energy and heat from the heart of a volcano in Iceland. Geothermal power plants use heat from deep inside the Earth to generate steam, which spins turbines for electricity production. Once the steam cools off, the remaining water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process again. Geothermal is an efficient and circular way to create energy, which Iceland has been doing for decades. Energy production is a major contributor to climate change, and fossil fuels account for almost 80% of the global emissions of CO2. We need a new way to live on our planet, and renewable energy is a top priority.
As a photographer, my aim is to document possible solutions to the climate catastrophe pushing our ecosystems to the limit.

As the population booms, we are draining the Earth’s resources in a linear "take, make, waste" economy. We are in a transitional time, when the world is awakening to the urgency of needing solutions for living sustainably on our planet—and realizing that this linear model is unsustainable. The concept of the circular economy, in which we are frugal with resources and recycle endlessly, is emerging as a way to a better future. It requires changing our mindset—to see waste as a resource and avoid creating trash in the first place. These were taken on assignment for "The End of Trash," a forthcoming cover story for the magazine. Follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to see the most promising examples of confronting the climate crisis.
