Programmers wondered how computers would interpret “00” when the date changed to the year 2000. The fear was that when clocks struck midnight, computer systems would fail to operate … causing chaos. Why? In the early days of electronic computers, memory was expensive, so programmers saved space by abbreviating the four-digit year designation, only storing the final two digits. So, would they interpret the new year as 2000 … or 1900? This wasn’t just a concern for PCs, but everything from medical equipment to elevators which used computer chips.  Businesses and government organizations created special teams to ensure that all hardware and software was Y2K compliant (Y2KC). In some cases, the fix was to replace outdated hardware and/or software. Other cases required time-consuming analysis of code and testing hardware.  For some of the teams working to prevent Y2K problems, the project overtook every aspect of their lives. It had no room for error and a fixed deadline that could not be extended. Companies distributed swag to to attract programmers or to motivate employees, like these “Millennium Bugs” Horizon Crops distributed.
