But in 1882, chances were good that a card like this would show up in your mailbox. 📬  This greeting card design, titled “Good Tidings of Great Joy,” won first prize in both the artistic and popular categories in a contest Boston lithographer Louis Prang held to determine which cards his company would produce that year. 💌  The contests offered prizes for a number of designs, some selected by a panel of judges and others by a popular vote. In 1882, this design won in both categories and was produced by Prang’s company that holiday season. 🏆  Dora Wheeler designed the card. Wheeler had studied with the painter William Merritt Chase. Together with her mother, Candace Wheeler, she designed textiles and wallpapers for the Associated Artists workshop in New York, which was affiliated with Tiffany & Company.👩🏻‍🎨 Prang’s contests were a great opportunity for women artists to exhibit their work, and women achieved significant successes. Of the 20 winning designs chosen during the contest’s five-year span, 10 were submitted by women.
