This box and wax cylinder may not look like much, but don’t let it deceive you.
W.J. Hammer, who worked for Thomas Edison, floated for nearly 100 miles over the French countryside in a balloon, recording sound on wax cylinders. Hammer dropped dozens of sealed boxes, like this one, with recordings attached to parachutes from the balloon. An inscription on the box asks if found, please return to it William J. Hammer at the address of his Paris hotel.
