American Indians in Cody’s cast were typically paid $25 to $75 a month to “play themselves.” What did “playing themselves” entail? During the show, American Indians were placed in situations that mirrored stereotypes held by many Americans.  In 1898 photographer Gertrude Käsebier saw a promotional parade for the Wild West show, and wondered if she could capture a more intimate … and realistic … portrait of the American Indians in the cast.  Chief Iron Tail sat twice for Käsebier. He hated his first, more intimate, portrait and tore up one of the prints (swipe to see this earlier portrait). His second portrait met with his approval. In it he wore his full feather headdress. Each feather in his headdress, or war bonnet, represented an act of bravery over a lifetime.
