Israeli police and soldiers at a checkpoint on the Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem may not realize their boots are standing on street slabs laid down by Romans. The 2,000-year-old blocks were found in their original position three meters deep during street work in 1980 and then raised up to the current street level. The bustling road that runs down through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City still follows the line of the main street of the Early Roman city (the period between 100 B.C.E.-100 C.E.).
