Video by @carltonward | The Caloosahatchee River, a canal that drains Florida's Lake Okeechobee west to the Gulf of Mexico, near Fort Myers, has been the dividing line for the breeding range of the Florida panther for the past five decades. The last female panther seen north of the Caloosahatchee had been in 1973—that is until late 2016 when @myfwc biologists documented a female at Babcock Ranch. I flew my drone over the Caloosahatchee for the Nature Conservancy. The link to the story is in my bio. We need more investment in land conservation north of the Caloosahatchee River, especially in the Kissimmee and Peace River valleys, where millions of acres of historic panther territory are waiting for the next generations. The same land is under siege by new roads and sprawling developments. Can we protect enough land in time to keep the Florida Wildlife Corridor connected so that the panther range can expand north throughout Florida and beyond?
