The fires often attract birds of prey looking to scoop up small animals displaced from their homes. Australia just experienced its hottest day on record on December 17, with the national average temperature reaching 40.9°C (105.6°F). Hundreds of brush fires continue to burn across the country, and coupled with severe drought, it looks like 2019 will be Australia's driest year in over a century.
