Artist Norman Rockwell created this (now iconic) image to illustrate President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech. In this January 1941 message to Congress, Roosevelt stated “We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms:” freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Rockwell created paintings which depicted all four.
