On August 20, 1619, kidnapped Africans arrived in the colony of Virginia. In the 400 years since, the nation has been shaped by the African American experience.
During the transatlantic slave trade, millions of captive Africans were loaded onto ships as commodities to bring a profit, humans treated as property.
These iron shackles in our @nmaahc's collection are small to fit a child. They're the type used to restrain enslaved people on the traumatic voyage from western African to the Caribbean and the Americas. The jouney became known as the Middle Passage.
Enslaved people fought for their freedom, from resistance on slave ships to rebellions on plantations. This month our @nmaahc will commemorate those who sought freedom, justice and equality in our nation's darkest times, tracing the struggle toward racial justice from 400 years ago through today. #Jamestown400 #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory

Wasn’t this country founded in 1776? Wasn’t the prohibition of the importation of slaves in 1808? And then completely eradicated by republicans in 1864? So in less then 100 years of its founding slavery was abolished in this country and democrats have been working to get it back ever since. Maybe the blame should go where it’s needed in regards to all this Britain, Spain and Africa. Of course they won’t tell you where slavery still runs rampant. Hint: it’s in Africa and the Middle East.

Everyone on here commenting about how Africans enslaved their own people need to realize that chattel slavery was a modern invention. The slavery that kidnapped Africans and their descendants experienced was far more brutal and traumatic than in certain parts of Africa. Read up about those differences and you will see that trying to point the blame back at Africans for atrocities that happened here.

Isn’t it true that African kingdoms owned and traded in slaves? Isn’t it true that if they weren’t sold to Whites in America , the African slaves would have been sold to Arabs and other Africans?
I’m surprised African governments don’t specifically apologize for their own culpability in slavery.

Ohh,! That image gave me a jolt when I realised what it was. Africans may have kidnapped and traded thier own people. But, it's like everything Supply and demand. Wouldn't have happened, had the West not required it. All done for free labour n profits. It doesn't bare thinking about. 😢

It still exists as sex trade, child trade, indentured service. 7-11s were brought to justice for indentured workers a few years ago. Independently operated, many were closed and new owners brought in. Many locals got used to asking counter people if they needed help. ❤️

Truly this is for all the African diaspora. Thank you @smithsonian and @nmaahc for telling the stories of the experiences of the Diaspora in the Caribbean and Central & South America. So many parallels and ALL descendants continue to face today! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
