Bears were their main prey, which they believed were a gift from the Goddess of the Mountains. Descendants of the matagi are keeping the culture alive. This feast of wild foods includes bear hot pot, deep-fried char, freshly caught in a local river, carp sashimi and dishes made from plants picked in the mountains. In the past couple of decades, a type of green pepper (shishito) which is related to red chili pepper, has also become a local specialty and a favorite crop for farmers.
