🙏🏻The Bon festival is held in Japan each summer to welcome back and honor the spirits of the ancestors. A vital part of this rite is the Bon dance. In Totsukawa, deep in southern Nara Prefecture, the finale dance of their Bon Odori (Bon dance,) is the Oo-Odori. Due to the village’s isolation, their dance has remained unchanged for 300 years and is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. It is characterized by the graceful use of fans and while most places use pre-recorded music, here, live drums and vocals are the only accompaniment. 🏮👘
