For more than thirty years, Sherman has worked as her own model, as she does in “Untitled #478.” At the center of this performative practice is a multitude of identity stereotypes that have arisen throughout the histories of art, advertising, cinema, and media. She reveals and dismantles these stereotypes as well as the mechanics of their production.
