Did you know there are lizards that fly? Well…glide, actually, but they’re able to cover as much as 100 feet (30 meters) on air currents to move from tree to tree thanks to wing-like membranes! Meet the flying lizards of the genus Draco, also known as flying dragons. There are around 45 species within the genus that inhabit the tropical forests of southeast Asia. They also have flaps of skin beneath their necks that aid in “flight,” and they use their tails to help steer. Beyond gliding, male lizards also flash their membranes for courtship rituals or to claim territory.
