Executed at the heart of Chaïm Soutine’s Cagnes period, ‘La Femme en rouge’ is one of the finest examples of Soutine’s portraiture. Painted circa 1923-24, the striking canvas is rendered in thinly painted, fluid and undulating strokes of the artist’s hallmark red – a color that would come to define Soutine’s magnificent still lifes of carcasses and game that followed. In addition, the work has been exhibited extensively around the world including at The Museum of Modern Art and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Musée de l’Orangerie des Tuileries in Paris, among many others.
