Number six from an edition of eight, François-Xavier Lalanne’s charming monkey, ‘Singe Avisé (Grand)’ is a rare and monumental bronze sculpture from circa 2005 that encapsulates the artist’s life-long fascination with the zoological world. Lalanne’s “avise”, or “insightful”, monkey represents wisdom. Here, Lalanne’s ‘Singe’ is pensively looking away, echoing the double entendre created by the word “avise”— the French verb “viser” referring to sight. Spectacular in volume, the work is imbued with the sense of playful elegance so often associated with Lalanne’s work.
