An icon of Impressionism, Claude Monet’s ‘Meules’ from 1890 is one of the most celebrated images in art history and one of only four works from the artist’s acclaimed Haystacks series to come to auction this century. Regarded as the most definitive artistic series of the 19th century, Monet’s Haystacks were inspired by the fields adjacent to the artist’s home in Giverny; the series takes its principal imagery from the monumental grainstacks that dominated the harvested fields from the high summer onward. Of the 25 works that Monet created in the early 1890s, only eight remain in private hands, with the 17 other examples residing in distinguished museum collections, including six in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
