This stunning white woodpecker is a native of the grasslands of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. While black and white feathers aren't all that uncommon in woodpeckers, this bird’s bright yellow eye patch is certainly a trait that sets it apart from the rest. This species is a welcome guest at many citrus plantations because of its healthy appetite for the irapuá bee, a pest of citrus growers. Although it is a rather uncommon bird to spot with a scattered distribution, the total population is thought to be increasing and its home range appears to be expanding further south.
