The South Georgia king penguin was first discovered by European explorers in the early 18th century. In the two centuries that followed, this species was almost entirely wiped out when the sealing industry turned to penguins as a source of oil once the fur seal population had been depleted. Thankfully, populations have been increasing since the practice of sealing there ended, and global populations of king penguins appear to be stable. South Georgia and Crozet islands are home to the largest colonies, made up of several hundred thousand birds, with the total population estimated at 1.6 million breeding pairs.
