The Essential Sutra of Great Wisdom which Permits Us to Reach the Shore of Enlightenment (The Heart Sutra)
The Bodhisattva of true freedom and compassion, when deeply practicing the Great Wisdom, clearly saw that all five aggregates that compose all world (form, perception, thought, will, consciousness) are nothing but emptiness (ku) and through this understanding, he helps all those who suffer.
O Shariputra, form does not differ from emptiness; emptiness does not differ from form. Form itself is emptiness, emptiness itself form. Perception, thought, will, and consciousness are also like this.
O Shariputra, every existence is, in character, emptiness; they neither arise nor cease, are neither defiled nor pure, neither increase nor decrease. Therefore, given emptiness, there is no form, no perception, no will, no consciousness; no eyes, no ears, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; no observable object or phenomenon, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, no object of mind; no realm of sight, no realm of mind consciousness. There is neither ignorance nor extinction of ignorance; neither old age and death, nor extinction of old age and death (that is, there are no twelve causes of pain). There is no pain, no desire that is the origin of pain, no obliteration of that desire, no path to that obliteration (that is, there are no four truths); no knowledge and no attainment of wisdom, nothing to attain.
With nothing to attain, bodhisattva relies on Great Wisdom, and thus the heart is free and without hindrance. Without hindrance, there is no fear. Released from all inverted thought and dreamlike delusion, one enters into the ultimate Nirvana. All buddhas of past, present, and future rely on Great Wisdom, and thereby attain unsurpassed, correct, universal wisdom. Therefore, know the Great Wisdom as the great mantra, the great bright mantra, the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra, which removes all suffering and is true, not false.
And so here is the Great Wisdom mantra, the mantra that says: ”Gyatei Gyatei Haragyatei Harasogyatei Bojisowaka (Go, go across to the other shore, go further beyond, Blessed be wisdom!).”
