Currently, the exhibition I curated at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, "Bubblewrap: After Mono-ha, the next established art movement is Superflat, but that means the interim period overlapping the years of Japan's economic bubble has yet to be named, and I think calling it "Bubblewrap" suits it well. It especially makes sense if you incorporate the realm of ceramics. This show will contemplate this period through works including those from Takashi Murakami's collection.” is on view, and I held a related talk show last Saturday, February 16th, at my Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo. The title of the talk was “On the occasion of the Bubblewrap exhibition, let us consider Lifestyle Crafts.” The talk was between Masanobu Ando @masanobu.ando (owner of Galerie Momogusa), Yasuharu Sugano @kogei_seika (Editor-in-chief of the magazine Kogei Seika), and myself. The post-war Japan has fostered a very peculiar environment in which there is a coalescence of fine art and subculture. In the talk show, we discussed what constituted Japanese beauty after the collapse of the Bubble Economy, beginning with the exploration on how big of an impact the idea of "beauty of poverty" propagated by the store Furudōgu Sakata had on the concept. We will continue our discussion on March 2nd and 3rd, on site at the museum where the show is being held. There is no English transcription available of the talk and I apologize for that, but I still wanted to announce it here.
