Most economists, as well as some the world's business elite, agree that economic growth is slowing. But some have expressed hope for a soft landing rather than an outright recession.

Paul Krugman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, thinks that there are good reasons to be skeptical about a “soft landing.” Krugman said it was unlikely to be just “one big thing” that would bring down the economy. Instead, a range of events would increase the likelihood of a slowdown such as Trump’s tax cuts and a bubble in the tech sector.

But Krugman’s biggest concern, beyond an outright recession, is that our leadership may not have an effective response if the economy slows down.
