“There’s been a number of tragedies in my family’s life. We’ve had five lynchings in my family, two uncles and three cousins over a long span of years....and yet, at the same time I still maintain in spite of my experiences, my family’s experiences, tragedies, I still feel that man is basically good.” –Charles White

Charles White’s Wanted Poster series, created in the last decade of his career, marks a shift to new visual and technical terrain. Modeled after posters seeking the recapture of enslaved people who had escaped, White links the trials of contemporary African Americans with those of their enslaved ancestors. Now on view in our #CharlesWhite retrospective, closing Sunday, January 13: mo.ma/charleswhite
