In this painting #CharlesWhite memorializes his cousin Willy J., who was killed as an innocent bystander during a bar robbery. The rounded portrait format recalls historic paintings of nobility, and includes a rose, often used to symbolize beauty and innocence. The text at the bottom of the painting—“BANG”—refers to the violence that resulted in Willy J.’s senseless death. Now on view.
