“Vignette Drawing: Create figure within an oval or circular shape or a combination with rectangular shape… Where the student has a great deal of freedom of choice as to subject theme, media, etc., he [is] encouraged to create a deeply felt statement. Where the content of his work becomes dominant as opposed to the dominance of form.”

For much of his artistic career Charles White worked as an educator, training a new generation of Black artists to create work that engaged with history and the social issues of the day. His students included Kerry James Marshall, David Hammons, John Biggers, and more. Try your hand at the assignment above taken from Charles White’s second year drawing course. Share your work with the tag #CharlesWhite for a chance to be featured on the MoMA account next week.
