The performance, which was originally conceived of and performed outside the Palacio del Congreso (historically a favored site of protest) in Buenos Aires, is a thoughtful meditation on the challenges and potentialities of collaboration. A procession of people, each holding a chair of their own choice, parade through a space before sitting down, one after another to form a circle. Before the circle is complete, however, the first person stands up again and begins walking. This process is repeated several times before the performance is completed. The dizzying repetition of standing, sitting, and processing, is perhaps a parody of the rituals of public office, where attempts at reforms risk becoming a cycle of false starts. Yet, the return of the circle throughout the piece—as an emblem of public gathering—also contains within it an aspirational aspect, where we are ultimately reminded of people’s resilience in the face of divisiveness.
