Photo by @nickcobbing | The tiny kayaks on this meltwater ravine were being paddled by glaciologists and their assistants. Using a chain of three kayaks, they towed a floating antenna attached to a radar unit to record a scan of the glacier below them. The signal transmitted and received by the radar revealed some of the the hidden structure of the ice below the meltwater. In documenting research like this, I was struck by how much photographers and scientists have in common: both are driven by curiosity. Eager to make real observations in the field, scientists will travel to remote and sometimes inhospitable places, driven by the desire to conduct new research and to strengthen existing data. The picture was taken on Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland, which has retreated substantially in the years since the picture was made, like many of Greenland’s glaciers affected by climate change. #adventure #glaciology #ice #greenland #climatechange
