These are my sketch books.
Every single one, since 2008.
Each one holds the threads of my life.
Drawings, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes awful, sometimes unfinished, there are gaps months long, sometimes there is just writing and no drawing at all. They hold every collection even before I was even doing collections.
A teacher at Central Saint Martins took us to the National Gallery one day to draw from the paintings. I got frustrated at how bad my drawings were and she told me to buy a small soft back sketchbook that was thin and light enough to keep in my bag so that whenever I was on the bus or tube I could do a quick drawing, and if I drew everyday I would get better at it. I brought one the next day and have had a sketchbook in my bag every single day since then. I started using these soft back Moleskine’s when I was interning in New York and now they have become an ongoing project in my life.
I recently found that teacher here on Instagram and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how much those words all those years ago have brought me, so thank you brilliant @charlotte___mann for helping me to love drawing, I have kept it with me all these years :) ❤️
