Simone Forti’s Dance Constructions were key forerunners to Judson Dance Theater. Made from inexpensive materials—including plywood and rope—and building on instructions written by the artist, each “construction” prompts actions such as climbing, leaning, standing or whistling.

“What does it mean then to have written instructions? It’s not always about executing—there’s also body-to-body transmission, a way of thinking, learning and activating,” says curator Ana Janevski. Drop in our #JudsonDance galleries on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. throughout the exhibition to see Dance Constructions performances, free with Museum admission.
