The work of two women artists, Hilma af Klint and R. H. Quaytman, currently on view in our rotunda, has challenged us to think about the history of modernist painting in new and vital ways. Follow along this week to discover abstract artists from the #GuggenheimCollection! #AbstractArtWeek

Vasily Kandinsky, long considered a pioneer of abstract art, has been linked to the history of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum more than any other 20th century painter. Hilla Rebay—artist, art advisor, and the museum’s first director—promoted nonobjective painting above all other forms of abstraction, and was particularly inspired by the work and writing of Kandinsky. With its undulating colored ovals traversed by animated brushstrokes, “Black Lines” (1913) is among the first of Kandinsky’s truly abstract paintings.
