The work of two women artists, Hilma af Klint and R. H. Quaytman, currently on view in our rotunda, has challenged us to rethink the history of modernist painting in new and vital ways. Follow along this week to discover abstract artists from the #GuggenheimCollection! #AbstractArtWeek

Joaquín Torres-García grew up in Uruguay before moving with his family to Spain and studying art. In 1926 Torres-García settled in Paris, where he developed Universalismo Constructivo (Constructive Universalism), a style that combined geometric abstraction with what Torres-García believed were universal structures and symbols. His simultaneous insistence on art’s spiritual underpinnings, its connections to the past, and the importance of the unconscious mind ran counter to the then-dominant factions of European progressive art.
