I wanted to do this post for some time but I held back until I watched the movie ? “Andy Irons-Kisses by God” I had heard of the story because Andy was from Hanalei in Kauai, Hawaii where I lived. I’ve seen his photos up but didn’t know the details of his passing or how truly amazing he was as a human being and athlete. I think his story is one of hope and inspiration. I encourage you all to watch the movie with an open mind.

I watched this movie in tears because it brought so much light to the connection between bipolar disorder and drug abuse. I think it was inspiring that Andy Irons overcame so much for so long with the mental battles he faced. He is a legendary athlete and became that with so many silent internal battles.

Someone very close to my heart struggles with bipolar disorder and drug abuse. I know his perception of his life and surroundings is very different. I constantly have to figure out how I can conform to show him I love love him. It’s not labeling people as “drug addicts” and throwing them away but more of an understanding of what’s behind self medicating. I cried so hard last night because I felt like I was so angry about my parents drug abuse for so long and focused on how it affected me. I told them all the time “what about us? Don’t you love us enough to stop using drugs?” It wasn’t until I read on depression and bipolar disorder that I because more compassionate to people who self medicate. I regret not asking my mom what’s the underlining reason you self medicate and how can I help you. No one should struggle in silence or be ashamed of a mental disorder and (I hate calling it that.) Looking back, I feel like I could have been more understanding and less angry.

Because you see and feel the world doesn’t mean your any less, don’t ever feel that way. God designed you perfectly. Your a blessing and you have a purpose. If your struggling with a mental illness and drug abuse please don’t stay silent. People love you reach out!
